Chipotle Mexican Grill Inc., operator of quick-service eateries known for gourmet burritos and other premium Mexican food, is opening a restaurant at the Irvine Company's 101 W. Broadway, a premier office building in the heart of Downtown San Diego.
Chipotle leased about 3,000 square feet of ground-floor space for a restaurant that is expected to open in early December. Terms of the lease were not disclosed.
101 W. Broadway, a 20-story glass building near federal and state courthouses, City Hall, hotels and Horton Plaza retail center, was a perfect fit for Chipotle. The location is perfectly situated to service daytime diners from 101 W. Broadway, surrounding office buildings, residents and Horton Plaza shoppers.
Denver-based Chipotle looked at other Downtown spots before picking 101 W. Broadway for its location and suitability for a restaurant.
The location is "at the bull's-eye" of what Chipotle was looking for Downtown, said Jon Horning of Flocke & Avoyer Commercial Real Estate, which represented Chipotle.
"Chipotle is a great addition along the Broadway Corridor and compliments such restaurants as Panera Bread, Yard House and RA Sushi," added Corinna Gattasso, Director with Cushman & Wakefield who represented the Irvine Company.
The restaurant is set to be Chipotle's first in Downtown and its 14th in San Diego along with others in development.
"Chipotle is a great addition to 101 W. Broadway," said John Turner, San Diego regional vice president of the Irvine Company Office Properties. "It adds to the wealth of onsite and nearby amenities for customers."
As with other Chipotles, the Downtown restaurant is set to offer produce from regional family farms and meat that is naturally and humanely raised. Companywide, Chipotle this year expects to use more than 10 million pounds of produce from local family farms and purchase more than 100 million pounds of naturally raised meats.
Chipotle's "Food with Integrity" philosophy stems from founder, Chairman and CEO Steve Ells and his commitment to responsibly and sustainably farmed ingredients.
101 W. Broadway, a proud Energy Star-labeled property, complements Chipotle's philosophy. Energy Star buildings use less energy than comparable buildings, making them a great choice for environmentally conscious companies such as Chipotle.
In the heart of Downtown, 101 W. Broadway is close to Union Station with access to Coaster and Amtrak trains as well as the San Diego Trolley. The Gaslamp District, Petco Park and waterfront all are in walking distance.
